The Ely Cemetery
This historical site located on Hillside Avenue was established by Captain William Ely around 1777, on "one rood" (a quarter of an acre) of his land, as the family's private burial ground.
In 1864, the cemetery was enlarged to twice its original size. A wall of native granite, quarried on their own farm, was built around the graveyard at a cost of $2,000.
The Ely Cemetery is open for tours every Memorial Day and Veterans Day from 2 pm - 4 pm. Please contact Renee Resky (973) 992-5855 to arrange a group tour.
